Getting help
MTG Spellbook is made by one person. There is no support queue and no ticket number — email goes straight to me, and I answer it.
Expect a reply within a few days. If something is broken, please say which iPhone you have and which version of iOS — Settings → General → About.
Reporting a problem
The three things that make a bug fixable, in order of usefulness:
- What you tapped, in order, right before it went wrong.
- A screenshot. Press the side button and volume up together.
- Your iPhone model and iOS version.
If the app is showing you an error message, send the message itself rather than a description of it — the wording tells me which branch of the code you hit.
Common questions
I paid for the unlock but the app still shows limits
Open Settings inside the app and tap Restore purchases. Purchases are tied to the Apple ID that bought them, so make sure the phone is signed in to the same one.
If it still doesn't take, email me with the date of the purchase and I'll sort it out.
How do I back up my collection?
Collection → the … menu → Backup. That writes a file you can save anywhere — Files, iCloud Drive, email it to yourself. Restoring reads the same file back.
Backups are free on both tiers and always will be. If you only do one thing after reading this page, do that one.
How do I turn on iCloud sync?
Settings inside the app → iCloud sync. It needs the unlock, and it needs the phone signed in to iCloud with iCloud Drive on.
Sync copies three files — your collection, your saved decks and your value history — into your own private iCloud storage. It is off until you switch it on.
The scanner isn't recognising anything
Check camera access first: iPhone Settings → MTG Spellbook → Camera.
After that it's almost always light or focus. Flat, even light beats bright light; hold the card still for a second rather than moving it around; and let the whole card sit in frame rather than filling it edge to edge. It reads the set code and collector number along the bottom of the card, so keeping that strip clear and in focus is what matters most.
Older printings without a collector number line still work — it falls back to reading the name.
A card's price looks wrong
Prices come from Scryfall and are a guide rather than a quote. They're also per printing — if the number looks far off, check that the entry is on the printing you actually own by tapping the set name on the card's screen.
Tap Refresh on the value panel to pull current prices for everything, decks included.
Can I get my decks out of the app?
Yes. With the unlock, a saved deck exports to Moxfield or a spreadsheet. A plain text list is free on both tiers.
Does it work on iPad or Android?
iPhone only for now. It will run on an iPad in iPhone compatibility mode, but it isn't designed for that screen and I wouldn't recommend it. There's no Android version.
Do you have my data?
No. There is no account, no server and no analytics — I have no way to see your collection or anything you do in the app. The privacy policy spells out exactly what leaves your phone and where it goes.
How do I delete everything?
Deleting the app removes everything it stored on the phone. If you had iCloud sync on, the three files it wrote are in your own iCloud Drive and you can delete them in the Files app under iCloud Drive.
There is nothing held anywhere else, because there is nowhere else.
How do I get updates?
The App Store handles them. If you have automatic updates switched on there is nothing to do; otherwise open the App Store, tap your picture in the corner and pull down to refresh the list.
Updates never touch your collection. It stays on the device across every version.
Requests
Feature requests are welcome and I read all of them. The ones that get built fastest are the specific ones — "I can't tell which of my two copies is the foil when I'm filtering" beats "better collection management".
If it's useful to you
A review on the App Store is the only thing that helps other people find this, and it takes about a minute: write one here. If something is wrong, though, please email me first — I would rather fix it than read about it.
